More iPad Competitors

“choosing a touch-screen tablet will mean deciding between different operating systems: Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, Palm’s WebOS, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry operating system, and Microsoft’s Windows 7″

Just a follow-up on my previous post regarding other major players gearing up to challenge Apple’s tablet empire.

Samsung Galaxy Tab ready to battle Apple iPad?

“Honestly, I don’t see anything [about the Galaxy Tab] that is weaker than the iPad”

The iPad has such a dominate hold on the tablet market it’ll be interesting to see if another player can pose a threat. Can the Galaxy Tab, Slate, or another device offer what Apple hasn’t? I believe that Apple’s upper hand comes from the vast application store it currently has.

However, Google has shown that at least there is hope of competing, when challenged the iPhone with the Droids. Offering flash has become the biggest attraction for others…no telling where these new technologies will lead…but I have a few thoughts.

1. For the tablet series – a docking station for office use. Design the all in on system to display on a larger screen, include a hard-drive, and a separate processor that takes over once dock to run demanding applications.

2. For cellular – well we pretty much have mini computers on our hips now…but the one thing that the newer devices are missing is IR. PLEASE BRING THIS BACK…think of it guys…universal remote!

Gmail Priority Inbox Sorts Your Email For You

Google has built a system that figures out which of your messages are important, and presents them at the top of the screen so you don’t miss them.”

Good concept…if this works as good as the spam filter I’ll enjoy it.

Recycling your old hard-drives

“you’ve built a nice collection of hard drives, internal or external, collecting dust in the corner…put them to good use.”

This is a question I always get when friends and family are upgrading to a newer machine. I’ve always donated older machines to the Good Will or to non-profit organizations. However, if over the years you’ve accumulated  gigs of files/photos/music, I’ve always suggested using the drive strictly for file storage (no need to fill your new machine with old files).

The following article gives several suggestions for re-purposing your old hard-drive for good use. Of the ten suggestions I’ve tried two.

Take a look… definitely good information.

Watch out Skype…Gmail is calling me.

“until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time. Given that most of us don’t spend all day in front of our computers, we thought, “wouldn’t it be nice if you could call people directly on their phones?”

After acquiring VoIP tech from Gizmo5, google announced their ‘call from gmail’ feature on Wednesday, August 25. It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out against major player Skype.  As we all know, when Google goes after anything, they go hard (not that Google has never came up empty handed…Buzz).

I’m currently waiting for this feature to be updated to my Gmail account. I’m sure I’ll have more to come as I test the features and integrations with Google Voice.

Facebook now offering to share your location…by default!

“Facebook Places, one more thing that everyone should disable.  Why on earth do you want to share with the world where you are, and the fact you’re not at home.”

When do you become too ‘social’? Although I’m inclined to say people should safe guard themselves when participating on a social site, I have to question Facebook’s’ ethics on this (and some other) move. Listen…it’s great that you offer various features with your site, however, just tell about these features and let me decide if I would like to use it.

Facebook…start putting out an ABP on all future enhancements

Please pass this important piece of information along to all Facebook users.

So you think you have a good password…

“It’s hard to say what will happen in the future, but for now, 12-character passwords should be the standard, said R. Boyd”

I can remember being the most hated guy in the office when I strengthened the password policy; complaints that employees would have to remember yet another password, or it changes too frequently, or better still it required more complexity. However, I have not required a minimum 12 characters…I wonder how that would go over?

So, do you regularly change your passwords? Do you have a different password for all of your important accounts? How concerned are you about your confidentiality online?

Note: I’ve already been asked about a good way to remember passwords. I’ll differ this to my friend at Veign…he got me hooked on Roboform a while back. Check it out

Wiping your smartphone clean

In response to Bren regarding my previous posting:

Information on smartphones is stored in flash memory and some data can be stored on a memory card. For the memory card, simply remove it from the phone. However, to delete flash memory data, perform a ‘hard reset,’ which returns the hardware to original factory condition. Remember to always double check text messages, email, call log, and contacts once the factory reset is done (I’ve personally ran into a few phones where not all of these items are deleted with a factory reset).

ReCellular cell phone recycling service provides instructions on many brand and model devices, to perform factory resets.

Note: Model number of many cell phones can be found under the battery.

How do you protect your smartphone?

‘That new iPhone or Google-powered phone in your pocket could be more valuable to thieves than your wallet. ‘

With the huge success of smartphone in today’s society, are you worried about the security of your device? Beyond locking your device (for those that do) does your iPhone/Droid device have virus protection and/or rouge application software that is actively running?

Working with Exchange server, I like that it forces security policies on windows based phones. I’ve noticed that Droid devices get around this in the way that it connects to Exchange (I can’t speak on the iPhone at the moment). Most devices, however, do wipe the phone after several wrong login attempts.

Please let me know what you are actively doing, what programs you are utilizing on your device(s), and what device(s) you are using.
